Once again we had a wonderful weekend for canoe school. About 130 particiants, and 60 instructors/
volunteers got together at Turners Bend on the first weekend in May, which this year was April 30 thru May 2. The weather was clear and the river at 2.8 feet on the gauge. We had seven tandem classes, six solo classes and seven kayak classes. The school this year will contribute over $6300 to the general fund, $1700 to the conservation fund from the raffle, and $450 to the River Valley chapter for the breakfast.
Planning for next year is already underway. Mark your calendar for May 5th thru 7th, 2000. An item likely to be added next year is a special class/experience for children. As it is envisioned now, the childeren's program will involve all day supervision of children in and around the water. If you have ideas or would like to volunteer your time at school for this program let me know. I will put your name on a list for future contact.
Also planned for before the next school is an instructor workshop to talk about safety, course content, the make-up of classes, and anything else of concern to the instructors. Stay tuned for details.
Many; many thanks to all of you who worked so hard to make this event a success.
p.s. You may have read about the "cussin" canoest. He was convicted in a Michigan court after shouting a string of obsenities in the presence of children. (He hit a rock and fell out of his canoe) You think we should offer him a scholarship for canoe school next year?
